Many women suffer with conditions such as PMS, Endometriosis, Ovarian cysts, Fibroids, Menstrual irregularities and PCOS. These are collectively known as gynecological problems. The Chinese have been using acupuncture for these conditions for up to 2000 years.
Menstrual disorders are often experienced even if women have not been diagnosed with a particular condition. Common symptoms are cramping in the lower abdomen, bloating, back pain, breast tenderness and emotional vulnerability. These are almost accepted as normal but according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the menstrual cycle should not be a time of discomfort. TCM views pain in the body as a blockage of Qi (energy) that can be cleared. Acupuncture points can be used to restore the flow of Qi reducing pain and promoting balanced energy. TCM theory states that the organs most involved in a woman’s menstrual cycle are the Liver, Kidneys and Spleen. By improving their functions, symptoms such as pain, tiredness, dizziness and back pain are reduced. There is often a simultaneous improvement in the mental and emotional state.
Although two clients may suffer from the same gynecological condition the imbalance that is causing the disharmony may stem from very different causes. For this reason it is important to obtain an accurate diagnosis. We do this through discussion and by using observational techniques such as looking at the tongue, feeling the pulse and palpating the abdomen. Common questions may include the nature of pain and whether it is sharp or dull. We would also ask about things that make it better such as heat, cold, pressure and types of food etc.
